Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra ~ Italian Baroque Music from the Jewish Ghetto

Time-travel to a Jewish ghetto in 17th-century Italy with America’s foremost early music ensemble.

In that time and place, Jewish violinist and composer Salamone Rossi bridged two worlds, entertaining the nobles in their salons and bringing Baroque Italian melodies into the ghetto and synagogue. PBO is joined by soprano Sherezade Panthaki, an international early-music star, for this presentation of Rossi’s beautiful and poignant sacred and secular music, enhanced by projected images and sparkling commentary by Italian Jewish Scholar Francesco Spagnolo and PBO’s famously witty music director Nicholas McGegan. Enjoy this special program on the eve of McGegan’s retirement from the San Francisco-based PBO, which under his direction has become recognized as America’s leading historically informed ensemble.
